MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (March 6, 2016) – With the majority of the population removed by generations from the farm, ag communicators play an important role in sharing the industry’s story. Each year, National Farmers Union (NFU) recognizes one communicator for outstanding reporting of agriculture. Dale Hildebrant of Farm & Ranch Guide received the Milton D. Hakel Award for Excellence in Agricultural Communications at NFU’s 114th Anniversary Convention’s opening ceremonies Saturday evening.

“Agriculture communicators are the link between our industry and the public. Dale’s insight into the viewpoints of family farmers and ranchers – balanced with his unbiased approach to journalism – is what makes him an asset to the agricultural community and deserving of this award,” said NFU President Roger Johnson.

The Milton D. Hakel award is presented to reporters or news outlets that demonstrate exceptional reporting of agricultural issues. The award was named in honor of Milton D. Hakel, a well-respected Farmers Union communicator. A list of past recipients of the award can be viewed here.

Raised on a North Dakota dairy farm, Hildebrant is no stranger to agriculture. He has been reporting on farm and ag news for more than 40 years. His contributions to the industry have received accolades, including: Mid-America Dairyman’s Young Dairyman Award, Honorary State FFA Degree, Honorary American FFA Degree, and the Hi-Line Award.

“Dale is a journalist who understands agriculture. I appreciate his dedication to the industry and respect his fair and accurate reporting of the issues important to farmers and ranchers,” Johnson concluded.

National Farmers Union has been working since 1902 to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities through advocating grassroots-driven policy positions adopted by its membership.
