Prior to the final vote, the Senate defeated an NFU-supported amendment offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., (#2310) giving the states authority to label foods containing genetically modified organisms with a 26-73 vote.  The body also considered several non-germane amendments.

Yesterday, in addition to the other key votes on amendments taken and outlined in the previous blog post, the Senate defeated on voice vote a Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., amendment (#2432) to eliminate funding for the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program.

Thanks to everyone who called, emailed or met with their Senators – your involvement is truly critical to motivating our policymakers to pass legislation that helps advance the economic prosperity of family farmers and ranchers across the country. Your continued action will be key to getting the House of Representatives to pass its version of the 2012 Farm Bill and a conference agreement completed before the Sept. 30 deadline.

The House Committee on Agriculture has announced it will begin markup on its version of the farm bill on July 11.
